Signs Your Garage Door Spring Is Broken
Garage door springs quietly do the hardest job in the system. They counterbalance the door's weight so the opener only has to manage the difference. When one fails, that balance vanishes instantly and the door becomes a several-hundred-pound object with nothing helping to lift it.
Spring failure is the single most common garage door emergency we are called out for in Salem. The good news is that it announces itself clearly if you know what to look for.
The loud bang you probably heard
Most broken springs make themselves known with a sharp bang — often mistaken for something falling over in the garage or a gunshot outside. What you heard was the stored energy in a coil releasing all at once.
If the door then refuses to open the next morning, those two events are almost certainly connected.
Visible signs on the spring itself
Torsion springs sit on a shaft above the door opening. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side. With the door closed, look at them from a safe distance.
- A clear gap of a couple of inches in a torsion spring coil
- A spring that appears stretched, sagging or separated
- Rust, flaking or heavy corrosion along the coil
- A cable hanging loose beside an extension spring
How the door behaves
Behaviour is often the giveaway even when you cannot see the spring clearly.
- The door opens four to six inches, then stops or reverses
- The opener strains, hums, then gives up
- The door feels immovable when you try to lift it by hand
- The door slams down rather than lowering under control
- The door will not stay open when you release it halfway
Why the door suddenly feels so heavy
A properly balanced door can be raised with two fingers because the springs are carrying almost all of the weight. Remove that counterbalance and you are lifting the entire door — commonly between 130 and 350 pounds depending on size, material and insulation.
This is also why the opener cannot cope. Openers are designed to overcome friction and a small weight imbalance, not to hoist the full mass of the door.
What to do — and what not to do
Leave the door closed. If it is already open, do not stand under it, and do not try to bring it down manually. Park elsewhere if you need the car.
Do not attempt to release, wind or replace springs yourself. Even a closed door's springs hold enough energy to cause serious injury, and correct replacement requires winding bars, correct spring sizing and proper technique. This is one of the few home repairs where the risk genuinely is not worth it.
Why springs fail when they do
Springs are rated in cycles, not years — a cycle being one open and one close. Standard springs are often rated around ten thousand cycles, which a busy household can reach in well under a decade.
Oregon's damp climate contributes too. Corrosion causes microscopic pitting in the steel, and each pit becomes a stress point. Regular lubrication as part of an annual tune-up measurably extends spring life.
